If a picnic is an option that appeals to you then shop for crusty bread and some of the delicious cakes.  The market has wonderful fruit and vegetables and is also a visual feast.  Shopping in a market is fun and easy.  You can get by with pointing and holding up fingers but it is much more satisfying to go prepared with a few words of French and a smile.

There is ample public transport in Nice — bus and train for trips along the coast or trams for getting around the resort.  Having saved so much by taking a cheap flight and living frugally you could treat yourself to a trip to Monaco just 20 minutes away by train.  Don’t plan to shop there as everything is ferociously expensive, even your morning coffee.  Definitely a day for a picnic!

If you want to escape the winter for a while you could visit Nice in February and take part in the largest street carnival in France.  June 21st will see bands out on the streets as part of the Fete de la Musique — the French national Music Day.  In mid July it is the Nice Jazz Festival when there is live jazz amongst the Roman ruins.
